The Canadian Federation of Students demands immediate action from the Government to protect Mi’kmaw fishers whose lives and well-being are being threatened by non-Indigenous commercial fishermen. Canada must solidify a commitment to respect Mi’kmaw people and their right to livelihood and wellbeing on their traditional territory outlined in the Treaty of 1756, and the Supreme Court Decision of Donald Marshall Jr.
The inaction demonstrated by the RCMP and the government’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans has highlighted systemic racism at the highest level and disregard for Indigenous life. The Federation condemns officers who acted as bystanders and witnessed settlers carry out violent attacks on Sipekne’katik territory.
The Federation stands in solidarity with the Mi’kmaw people in their fight for a moderate livelihood. We call on students and student unions to take meaningful action on their campuses to support the inherent rights of Indigenous communities.
