October 4th for the Sisters in Spirit, we honour and bring awareness of the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people. Take a moment to honour and reflect on this day of remembrance for our community, our matriarchs, our sisters, mothers, grandmothers, and our kin that have been affected by this violent crisis.
There will be a live stream hosted by the Native Women’s Association of Canada on October 4th, 2020 starting at 2 pm ET, which you can find on their website or Facebook page. Use their website to add it to your calendar, or to find many other Sisters in Spirit events being held.
In June 2019 the National Inquiry Final Report to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was released. In response to the Final Report, the Circle of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Students released the Membership Advisory: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Final Report Calls for Justice relevant to Student Organizations and Educational Sector, in November 2019.
The Membership Advisory highlights numerous calls to justice that range from calls to justice for educators to calls to justice that are 2SLGBTQQIA+-specific. These calls to justice highlight root causes of the high rates of violence perpetrated towards Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ community. The Federation continues to work on the implementation of the Membership Advisory Calls to Justice to ensure the steps of decolonizing colonial institutions and demand the end of the violence towards Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
