Prairies RISE 2019
Prairies RISE 2019

From March 1st- 3rd, 2019 students from universities across Manitoba and Saskatchewan came together for the 2nd ever Prairies RISESummit. Hosted at the beautiful First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, the theme of this year's gathering was 'Language, Love and the Land'. This theme was selected by organizers because of fundamentality and instructive power of language, love and land to the Indigenous and racialized community.

Throughout the weekend, students attended panels and workshops that were shaped for and through the lens of our most marginalized learners.

Panels on Decolonizing Love, Gender and Sexuality; and Storytelling Through Art were held. Attendees also participated in workshops on Kinship and Relationality and Supporting Student Parents. All sessions were led by a mixture of students, alumni, faculty and community members from the Prairies who are engaged in equity work. These summits allow students from different backgrounds to share their stories and experiences with navigating post-secondary education. It is important to create space for the development of voices and perspectives from those who have been systemically oppressed and erased. This weekend, we were proud to create and sustain those spaces for each other so we can encourage healing through laughter and learning.
