Statement Regarding OPSEU Strike

The Canadian Federation of Students offers its full support for more than 12,000 Ontario public college faculty who are striking for fairness. Today, members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) are on the picket line calling for equal pay, academic freedom, collegial governance, and more mental health resources.

Throughout the province of Ontario, students and their teachers have been feeling the lasting effects of chronic underfunding from successive Ontario and Canadian governments. Large class-sizes, lack of job security for professors and instructors, rising tuition fees and degradation of campus facilities are all the result of decades of funding cuts and fee increases. As much as governments can be blamed for these issues, institutions also share responsibility for ensuring they do right by students, staff, faculty and the broader community.

Members of OPSEU united with us in calling for the elimination of tuition fees during the National Day of Action last November. We must stand united with them now in calling for justice and dignity at work.

Sign and share this letter of support to show solidarity with college faculty who are calling for #abetterplan.
