New poll shows majority of Nova Scotians believe tuition fees are too high
HALIFAX – According to a new opinion poll commissioned by the Nova Scotia Post-Secondary Education Coalition, 85% of Nova Scotians support reducing tuition fees.
“Nova Scotians have made it clear that the cost of a college or university education is too high,” said Nick Stark, spokesperson for the Canadian Federation of Students – Nova Scotia. “Now is the time for the provincial government to listen to the majority of Nova Scotians and reduce tuition fees.”
Over the past two decades, tuition fees in Nova Scotia have skyrocketed. Average tuition fees are $6,185 per year, $413 above the national average, while average student debt has surpassed $31,000. Meanwhile, public funding of universities has been cut 10% over the last three years.
The poll also shows high levels of support for maintaining and improving the quality of students services offered on campus, with 92% of Nova Scotians agreeing that student services are important to post-secondary education in the province, and 61% believing they should grow.
“Nova Scotians understand that front line services such as libraries, academic advising, and disability services are central to ensure that students are receiving the quality education they deserve,” said Stark. “The results of this poll should send a strong message to university administrators and government that ongoing cuts to these services are not acceptable.”
Formed in 2005, the Coalition, comprised of the Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers, the Canadian Federation of Students-Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, has conducted four polls, in 2007, 2010 and 2013. Each poll has showed sustained or growing support for increased funding to our universities and colleges, replacing provincial student loans with non-repayable student grants, and reducing tuition fees.
