70th SAGM Ends on a positive note!

The Canadian Federation of Students held last week its 70th Semi-Annual General Meeting and members were pleased to see that four days of meetings ended on a positive note, reflecting the values of solidarity and cooperation of our student movement.

In the closing plenary, delegates unanimously voted in favour of three emergency motions, showing that students stand together. First, they voted for the Canadian Federation of Students to support Beatrice Hunter, Inuk Elder and grandmother charged for her actions in opposition to the Muskrat Falls project in Labrador, by calling for her liberation and by donating $2000 to her legal fund. Second, delegates were in favour of supporting the amendment to Bill S-3, which would address discrimination against Indigenous women and their descendants in the Indian Act. This amendment would finally place Indigenous women and their descendants on an equal footing with Indigenous men and their descendants, with respect to acquiring and transmitting Indian status. Lastly, delegates voted favourably for the Canada Federation of Students to support students in Newfoundland and Labrador by condemning the provincial government for ceasing its commitment to accessible, well-funded and high-quality system of post-secondary education.

Another highlight of the four days of meetings was the entry of Dalhousie Association of Graduate Students (local 113) into the Canadian Federation of Students! Delegates ratified their referendum result and officially welcomed DAGS as a member. We look forward in working with and for Dalhousie graduate students!
